Discussing tolerance, I took 5 students to Poland and it was as Erasmus as it gets!

Let’s Discuss Tolerance

And so we did. During those five days in Poland 5 Poli students, together with students from Slovenia, Ukraine and Poland, discussed the possible ways and means of becoming more tolerant. They shared their knowledge, experiences and ideas related to the topic.

For me, as the leader of the group, it was interesting to see how mature our students are and how actively they participated in the workshops. They were talking about identity, cultural differences, diversity, intolerance, prejudices. Although the participants came from different countries, they found a lot of things in common and they all agreed regarding the importance of raising awareness and educating people about being more open-minded, accepting and tolerant. The activities in the above mentioned workshops were diverse and enjoyable thus helping the participants to be able to talk about this serious topic more openly.

In the evenings students introduced their countries as well. Each group did a presentation in which they showed the others their traditions and sights. We cooked traditional dishes and tasted the ones made by the other groups. We also sang and danced together in the conference room and, despite the cold Polish weather, around a bonfire.

We spent two days outside Korzkiew when we visited Auschwitz and Cracow. The trip to Auschwitz was more than shocking. Words cannot describe how we felt seeing where hatred and intolerance could lead people. However dreadful the experience was, it highlighted the importance of accepting and respecting diversity in every situation.

During the guided tour to Cracow we visited an interactive exhibition about the life of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the Polish national hero, the Wawel Castle, St Mary’s Basilica and the Market Square. We also had some free time to explore this beautiful city.

All in all, this Erasmus programme about tolerance was useful and remarkable. Our students learned a lot about the world, made new friends and were able to use their English in real- life situations.
